We Can All Be Safer Drivers

In 2021, there was an 18.4% increase in road deaths accidents. It's the largest number of projected deaths for that period since 2006 and cannot be explained solely by an increase in cars on the road. The rising number of serious car accidents is often attributed to dangerous behaviors.

We all need to be attentive drivers to make our communities safer. It's our responsibility to obey local traffic laws and not put ourselves or other drivers in danger.

Sending a quick text or taking a bite of a cheeseburger while driving might seem innocent. But taking your eyes off the road for five seconds at 55 mph means you've traveled the entire length of a football field without looking where you're going.

Other top distractions to avoid include loose pets roaming in the car, socializing with passengers, adjusting music or temperature controls and even personal grooming. These distractions take your mind and eyes off the road, which can lead to unsafe situations.

We can all be better defensive drivers and create good driving habits such as limiting distractions inside the car, downloading apps that will help you observe how well you drive, and setting your phone to do not disturb.

Let's work together to reduce the number of fatal accidents and protect one another.
